About Lighthouse Marlow
Lighthouse is a holiday club for children which is run for one week during the summer holidays. Lighthouse was started in Great Missenden in 1987, since then it has spread and ‘daughter’ Lighthouses now run in surrounding areas. Lighthouse is an ecumenical Christian enterprise.
Children of other faiths, or no faith are welcome to attend, on the understanding that they must attend all sessions, including Biblical teaching.
Each child is put in a group of about 10 children of the same age, the group has an adult 'Lighthouse Keeper' and one or more teenage 'Lamplighters' to help with the activities and to ensure that every child has a good time and gets as much as possible out of their week at Lighthouse.
Who is it for?
Lighthouse in Marlow in 2011 took children aged 5 to 11 years. Children aged 5 to 9 join a 'Lighthouse' made up of about 10 children of their own age, an adult 'Lighthouse Keeper' and one or more teenage 'Lamplighters'.
The oldest children have a separate programme of activities more suited to their age.
All children must be registered. Over 300 children took part in 2011; in 2012 we would like to take even more children, but this will depend on getting enough helpers.
In 2012 Lighthouse in Marlow will run from 13-17 August, slightly later than usual due to Olympics commitments. Registration for children will open in June, after the summer half term holiday.
A large number of adults are needed to help during the Lighthouse week, as well as in the weeks leading up to Lighthouse. Adults are needed to run sport, drama and craft activities, to run teaching sessions and to support worship sessions with music and singing. A crèche is available for the children of helpers who are too young to join a Lighthouse.
What happens?
The day at Lighthouse starts with children arriving at 10am and being taken to their Lighthouse group where they will have a few minutes to catch up with the friends they have made during the week. An energetic worship session sets the scene for the rest of the day.
The rest of the day is broken up into short sessions where children will take part in organised activities including drama, sport, craft, teaching and 'Mainstage' fun and worship. Each group will do each type of activity every day, supervised by an adult Lighthouse Keeper and one or more teenage Lamplighters. The Lighthouse day ends at 3.30pm.
